Honoring the Life & Legacy of Larry Wood

Larry retired as Benhaven’s Executive Director in 2016, after over 40 years as a humble and revered leader at Benhaven. Larry passed away in South Carolina on May 20, 2024.

Larry liked to say that he had held every position at the School, except for school nurse. Larry never stopped envisioning a better life for the people we support and their families. And he often rolled up his sleeves and did whatever was needed at the time to help make that happen. The last several years before his retirement, he made his way to the School every single afternoon to help answer phones and manage end-of-day routines. He knew everyone’s name. If you’d spoken to him about something in your life, he remembered it. He made you feel like you were the most important person whenever you spoke to him.

Larry mentored scores of Benhaven employees. He was incredibly smart and wanted to share what he knew. He encouraged us to grow beyond what we thought was possible for ourselves. He will be sorely missed by those of us who knew him.

His legacy lives on at Benhaven in who we are and what we do!
